Comprehension Captains

Above is a group picture of the first Comprehension Captain Crew. The captains are responsible for helping keep a group of pirates on task while they popcorn read the text, answer questions, or work on a project. I will be with a small group of pirates reading, or working on a specific skill. The Captains will change randomly for different subjects. After the reading session there will be a "friendly" comprehension game that will earn the pirates on the winning team some "booty". Check back to see pictures of other Comprehension Captains.

Cooking Up GREAT Sentences

In May, you will be giving presentations on how to "cook up" a great sentence! We will invite some third grade classes to our room to watch our "Cooking Show". haha Each group will write a recipe that we'll share with the third graders and yes....chef's hats will be worn. You know Mrs. E LOVES silly hats! haha I promise you will remember this year! I will divide you into your comfortable groups, so at least that part will be okay. However, there will only be 4 in each group.

Punk, Punk, Punctuation

We are going to be doing a LOT of writing from now until the end of school, so review this song, so you'll be ready! Boys and Girls, the author of this song, Jeff Rubin, e-mailed Mrs. E and gave me the link to the lyrics. His site is VERY awesome and we'll look at it next week! We are going to have fun singing this song in our class!!

Buddy Reading with Mrs. H's Class

After the achievement test the kids are going to join some of Mrs. Henderson's kids to buddy read. They will be reading chapter books and doing projects that relate to the story as well as a review of the reading skills from this year. It will be GREAT FUN!

Long E Spelling Skits

At the beginning of school some of the students are overwhelmed by the number of words and the length of the words. haha We chunked the words and made silly stories using them. It was a lot of fun!!

Dr. Seuss

During the week of Dr. Seuss' birthday we read various books by him to popular hip hop instrumental beats. The kids learned how most songs are basically poetry put to music, so we put it to the test. We also created different projects that go along with his books. For example, we created paper doll Sneetches and wrote the lesson that the Sneetches learned in the story.

Kate's Cereal Box Project/Commercial was AMAZING!! Her prize that went inside her box was a CD, that she burned, that had the song Pretty Woman on it. She chose that song because it went with her book Little Women.

Each child took a rubric home that gave directions for decorating the bottle as well as writing the letter. I will link the rubric, letter to parents, and the specific directions at a later date. If you want to e-mail me I would be happy to send them to you!

WOW!!!! The projects are turning out beautifully!!! I am VERY impressed with the quality of work that I have received with this project! I can't wait to hear the presentations on Friday. Be looking for pictures of the presentations and projects!

Reading Challenge:

Brainstorm songs and lyrics and see if you can think of a few that go with the top three stories on the side. For example: I think of It's Magic....a song that would fit with Houdini. See if you can think of a few and there may be a prize.

Remember, when you study vocabulary you need to do the following: 1) Try to get a picture in your head. 2) Learn a few key words that will help you to know it. 3) If possible, try to relate it to something you're familiar with.
